- Tiers – Add taller plants to the back and shorter plants in the front; this expands the space and gives it a better scale. Taller plants can also go in the corners or the sides, with shorter plants in the center. Containers, terraces, and raised beds will also create tiers.
- Colors – Warm colors, like orange, red, and yellow, are bold and filling and are better placed in the front of the yard to create a more welcoming flow. Cooler tones, like blues and greens, are best in the background, where they will recede from the eye and provide the illusion of more depth and openness.
