Landscaping Tips for Box Hedges

How to Prune Box and Yew

When it comes to landscaping, nothing makes it neater than a well-trimmed box hedge. So if you are wondering what this takes, carry on reading this post.

When trimming a hedge, take the time to string a line, this will make sure it is level and straight. You should also check for any bird’s nest before you begin, if your hedge is tall, use a sturdy set of steps so you can do the job safely.

Large, formal hedges must always be cut with a slight taper towards the top. As this will allow more light to reach the bottom of the hedge. Lower hedges, like a parterre, must have vertical sides. Either way, keep stepping back to check as you start to trim, as it is all too easy to cut off too much.

If you need to rejuvenate an overgrown hedge, both box and yew can be cut back in late spring. When dealing with yew hedges, this is best done slowly, cut back one side and leave it to regrow before doing the other side.

When is the best time to prune Box hedges?

Prune box hedges in either late May or early June, once the risk of frost has passed. It can be tidied up in September to ensure it has a crisp finish over winter.

Choose a dry but cloudy day to trim your hedge, and try not to prune in hot sunshine as this can result in leaf scorch, however, you should note that damp and humid conditions can encourage the spread of box blight.

Remove all the clippings immediately to reduce the risk of blight. If you put down some plastic before you work, it will make it easier to remove them once you have done the job.
